In 2020, the Good Trouble Think - Tank developed a driving tool the size of a business card called “Driver Tips.” This card provides all drivers with instructions on how to comply with law enforcement if pulled over during a traffic stop or incident.
Statistics show that black and brown individuals are more likely to be stopped by the police than their white counterparts, and often, these encounters lead to violence or death.
The driving tool provides instructions on what to do when encountering law enforcement during a traffic stop. It serves as a preventative measure and one that we hope will reduce the number of violent or deadly encounters.
This tool will de-escalate and mitigate any conflict with drivers and law enforcement.
The purpose of this proposed bill is to guarantee safeguards to ensure the safety of the driver and the police during a traffic stop. The proposed bill will reduce confrontational, violent, or fatal encounters during police stops.
The Good Trouble Think-Tank believes this driving tool/tips should be implemented at the local, state, and federal level to change the narrative of policing in our communities. If this proposed legislation is sanctioned, the mandate would every driver receive the driving tool, the motor vehicle administration would require driving schools and driver education facilitators to add this information to their curriculum.
